Faith and spirituality are major components to many people’s sobriety.

Faith and religion would refer to various structured beliefs. Spirituality is a personal search for meaning in life, for connection with all things and for the experience of a power beyond oneself.

When making the distinction between the two, I like to describe religion as a belief, and spirituality as a feeling. You do not need to be religious to be spiritual. You do not need to meditate, pray or do anything other than be curious about your purpose.

Many people who have experienced addiction describe feeling as if they were living without purpose. With deep emotional wounds, they closed inwards to protect themselves. Recovery brings to us a higher consciousness, the ability to observe the feelings inside of us without becoming entangled with them.

Active Recovery Winnipeg follows the three “C”’s of spirituality to support long term recovery from mental health and addictions.

The 3 C’s of spirituality:

Connection – When we feel connected to something bigger than ourselves.

Compassion – Kindness and acceptance toward ourselves and others.

Contribution – Feeling the need to be of service and create or give back to the world.
