Defining Sexual Health
Sexual health is more than having an active, safe sex life. It’s also a state of physical, emotional, mental and social well-being regarding sexuality.
Sexual health requires a positive and respectful approach to sexuality and sexual relationships, as well as the possibility of having pleasurable and safe sexual experiences, free of exploitation, discrimination and violence.
Sex is only healthy when these six principles are in place:

- Consent – The most universal sexual health principle on the planet. It means voluntary cooperation. Establishing consent through each step allows space for sexual safety.
- Non-exploitative – Exploitation is when someone uses their power and control to gain sexual gratification. This means someone is being used for sexual purposes. That person may be putting themselves in even more danger if they say no. Manipulation using money, drugs, clothing or shelter is used to obtain sex.
- Honest – Sexual health requires open and direct communication with yourself and every partner you have.
- Shared Values – Knowing your own boundaries and making sure they align with your partner. You do not need to agree on everything, but you must respect how each other feels about intimacy, trust, and rules.
- Mutual Pleasure – The ability to give and receive pleasure. Mutual pleasure can only happen when all other principles have been met.
- Protection from HIV, STIs and unwanted pregnancy. This includes access to testing, medical care and scientifically accurate information regarding disease transmission, reproductive health and contraception resources.
