Mindfulness can be a steady anchor when you’re choosing sobriety, especially in a city known for nature, parks and community. Winnipeg, Manitoba offers many spaces conducive to healing and growth. My addictions group Active Recovery Winnipeg meets regularly in the community to appreciate art, nature and sobriety.
What is Mindfulness?
Mindfulness is the practice of being aware of and accepting the present moment without judgment. This also can include everything from our breath to our emotions.
Have you ever felt like you were running on autopilot?
This means acting without conscious thought, also known as “zoning out”, sometimes due to stress. Additionally, it may happen when we ruminate about the past, worry about the future or perform something habitual.
When we operate on “autopilot,” we often act without thinking. Our reactions can go unnoticed until they become overwhelming due to physical, emotional, or psychological stress. These responses can manifest as bodily tension, distressing feelings, panic attacks, depression, or negative self-talk.

Why Mindfulness Matters in Sobriety:
Mindfulness enhances awareness of cravings and habitual thought patterns. It also encourages acceptance of the present rather than chasing immediate gratification.
For those who have relied on alcohol or drugs for extended periods, finding joy in daily activities can be difficult. Mindfulness can enhance our ability to appreciate and engage in these moments, leading to a greater resilience to handle life’s adversities.
How to Practice Mindfulness:
1. Body Scan: Focus on the physical sensations in your body while seated comfortably, breathing deeply and slowly.
2. Breathing Focus: Concentrate on your breath, inhaling deeply and noticing the sensation of air entering your nose and filling your lungs.

Mindfulness in addictions treatment
Mindfulness in treatment entails developing non-judgmental, present-moment awareness of thoughts, feelings, and physical sensations. It significantly assists participants in overcoming automatic behaviors, controlling stress, and processing emotions without feeling overpowered.
